The Beat (British band) - Wikipedia

The Beat (known in the United States and Canada as the English Beat and in Australia as the British Beat) are an English band formed in Birmingham in 1978. Their music fuses Latin, ska, pop, soul, reggae and punk rock. The Beat, consisting of Dave Wakeling (vocals, guitar), Ranking Roger (vocals), ... The Beat formed in Birmingham, England, in 1978, during a period of high unemployment and social upheaval in the United Kingdom. Ranking Roger, one of the band's vocalists, added a Jamaican vocal flavour to the band's sound with his toasting style. Jamaican saxophonist Saxa added a Jamaican ska instrumental sound.Saxa (born Lionel Augustus Martin in 1930) had played saxophone with Prince Buster, Laurel Aitken, and Desmond Dekker in the first wave of ska. He joined the Beat to record their first single, "Tears of a Clown", a cover version of the Motown hit by Smokey Robinson and the Miracles. The band's debut studio album, I Just Can't Stop It, was released in May 1980, entering the UK albums chart at No.Although the Beat's main fan base was in the UK, the band was also popular in Australia, partly due to exposure on the radio station Triple J and the TV show Countdown. The Beat had a sizable following in the US and Canada, where the band were known as the English Beat for legal reasons (to avoid confusion with the American band the Beat). The Beat toured the world with well-known artists including David Bowie, the Clash, the Police, the Pretenders, R.E.M., the Specials and Talking Heads. Members of the band often collaborated on stage with the Specials. After the break-up of the Beat in 1983, Dave Wakeling and Ranking Roger went on to form General Public and had a couple of hit singles in the US and Canada including "Tenderness", while Andy Cox and David Steele formed Fine Young Cannibals with vocalist Roland Gift from the ska band Akrylykz.

Concert review: BEAT: Adrian Belew, Tony Levin, Steve Vai, and Danny Carey reimagine 1980s King Crimson | 12.11.24, The Factory

I was one-week-ago-years-old when I learned just how fundamental King Crimson is to my musical preferences. I had some prior knowledge of the band going into the BEAT Tour, but it was patched together from different points of reference. I knew the band was influential for many rock giants. Just as it was impossible to determine Carey’s attire behind the full, elaborate drum kit, it was impossible to grasp what a towering figure Carey is until he was standing face-to-face with someone of seemingly average height, such as Belew. He is giant. The two played together, laying the foundation for “Waiting Man,” as the rest of the band gradually joined from backstage.2 Comments on Concert review: BEAT: Adrian Belew, Tony Levin, Steve Vai, and Danny Carey reimagine 1980s King Crimson | 12.11.24, The Factory · I was one-week-ago-years-old when I learned just how fundamental King Crimson is to my musical preferences. Malaika's secret trick involves placing two rubber bands, one around each ear, while walking around in the morning. While it might look odd, this low-effort hack fits easily into daily routines and requires no fancy tools or treatments. She recommends doing this before makeup to visibly reduce swelling and give a more lifted appearance. For Malaika, the tighter the rubber band, the better, as it “yanks” the skin slightly to hold everything in place. This gentle pull may encourage circulation, reduce inflammation, and provide an instant “snatched” look.If you suffer from sinus sensitivity or find ice water uncomfortable, this rubber band trick offers a gentle, safer solution to morning puffiness. It’s perfect for those wanting a quick, hands-free depuffing method without resorting to heavy creams or expensive gadgets.Consistency is key, wearing the bands for a few minutes daily can help maintain a refreshed look.

How Adrian Belew assembled his ‘dream band’ BEAT to play '80s King Crimson

Supergroup features Steve Vai and Tool’s Danny Carey along with Crimson bassist Tony Levin. Belew explains the group’s formation and more. BEAT. Photo from Publicity by Alison Dyer. When rumors of a tour uniting King Crimson alumni Adrian Belew (vocals, guitar) and Tony Levin (bass, vocals) with guitar star Steve Vai and Tool drummer Danny Carey to play music from the King Crimson’s 1980s lineup emerged earlier this year, the internet just about exploded. The news turned out to be true. And when tickets for the shows, under the band name — reportedly suggested by King Crimson visionary Robert Fripp — BEAT went on sale in April 2024, sellouts were immediate.GOLDMINE: Let’s talk about BEAT. As I understand it, your original idea was to reunite the 1980s King Crimson lineup with Tony Levin, Bill Bruford and Robert Fripp. How did the band ultimately come together with Steve Vai and Danny Carey? And then who's going to do that?” Steve had a lot of great ideas too, for himself and us, to make it more our own, as well as, of course, we know you have to play it perfectly in some cases. There are some essentials there that have to be done perfectly right. I think everyone’s for that, but we don't want to be a cover band. We want to take it into a new place. BEAT.I hate to leave them out, but this is a way to focus on one period. Depending on the life of this band, maybe we could go to another period. Who knows? We'll see. GM: Perhaps you can bring back Trey Gunn and Pat Mastelotto (from the 1997-1999 Thrak lineup) and have a six-piece BEAT?
